Cotswold Leader says ‘stop the misery for 50,000 people’
9 March 2009
Cllr Lynden Stowe, Leader of Cotswold District Council, today called on property developers, St Modwen to "throw the towel in" on their Middle Quinton Eco Town plans.
Cllr Stowe said: "For nearly two years, the lives of 50,000 local residents have been blighted and made miserable by the thought of a new town being plonked in the middle of their open countryside, bringing with it the prospect of ‘construction site hell' for fifteen years.
He added: "We now know that independent consultants estimate the financial shortfall of the ‘eco-town' to be more than £370 million. Taxpayers simply cannot afford that sort of money.
"Not only is this environmental "Hiroshima" hanging over the heads of thousands of local people, but the local authorities are having to spend thousands and thousands of pounds replying to countless government consultation documents.
"This money would be far better spent on frontline services for our residents or keeping council tax bills down.
"Surely, the time has come for St Modwen to throw the towel in and say ‘enough is enough'. They can then get on with what they do best such as regeneration in urban areas and leave the people of the Cotswolds, South Warwickshire & South Worcestershire to get on with their lives."
